Nine Local University Students Win Internships with Chinese Internet Giants

Recipients of inaugural Singapore Valley Awards will intern at innovation companies such as and Alibaba Group

Singapore, 23 March 2018– Nine university students have been named as recipients of the inaugural Singapore Valley Awards (“SVA”), an entrepreneurship competition that offers young talents the opportunity to intern with China’s leading technology companies and experience the country’s dynamic start-up ecosystem first-hand.

The winners were chosen from a pool of 79 applicants from all six of Singapore’s Autonomous Universities, following two days of intensive pitch sessions last December to a panel of 10 judges from Asian technology and venture capital firms.

Each winner will undertake a fully sponsored three-month long internship starting April 2018 with one of the SVA’s six partner companies in China:, Alibaba Group, GGV Capital, Matrix Partners China, Qunar, and Shanghai Kingnet Technology. They will each receive monthly allowances of S$2,000 and return air tickets.

To prepare for their internships, the winners travelled to China on 18 January to meet the participating companies to discuss placement opportunities in detail. The sponsored two-day trip included tours of and Alibaba Group’s respective headquarters in Shanghai and Hangzhou, which were hosted by the companies.

The SVA is seeded through S$3.35 million funding from five China-centric entrepreneurs – Mr. Pang Sheng Dong, Mr. Eddie Wu, Mr. James Sheng, Mr. Wang Yue, and Mr. Calvin Cheng.

“The Singapore Valley Awards give local students a window to one of the world’s most disruptive and influential entrepreneurial scenes. We hope the winners will use this internship to gain insights into China’s meteoric rise, as well as cultivate the skill sets necessary to drive Singapore’s development on the global stage,” said Mrs. Lim Hwee Hua, SVA Co-Chair and Executive Director of Tembusu Partners.

“China’s market offers unparalleled scale and a host of opportunities for Singapore entrepreneurs. We were impressed by the resourcefulness and innovative thinking displayed by the students and we believe that the Singapore Valley Awards will allow the winners to further hone their entrepreneurial skills,” said Mr. Pang Shengdong, SVA Co-Chair and Founder of Shanghai-listed Fintech company

The annual awards are open to full-time undergraduates from any of the city-state’s six Autonomous Universities – National University of Singapore; Nanyang Technological University; Singapore Management University; Singapore University of Social Sciences; Singapore University of Technology and Design; and Singapore Institute of Technology.
