Singapore Valley Awards 新峡谷奖

The Singapore Valley Awards (SVA) is an annual entrepreneurship award that offers students, with the most compelling business ideas, a fully-sponsored internship in China to acquire deeper knowledge of the China market and entrepreneurship in practice.

First conceived in early 2017 by a group of entrepreneurs with China-centric businesses and in partnership with Singapore-based private equity firm Tembusu Partners, SVA aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among undergraduates in Singapore.

We are seeking the best business ideas

We select individuals in any field of study. We are looking for individuals motivated by solving hard problems.

We’re looking for the best potential entrepreneurs to join. The SVA programme will enable individuals to develop relevant professional competencies, knowledge of market, networks and interpersonal skills through immersion in China and working in the top Chinese technology companies and venture capital investment firms. Internship Programme

SVA is an annual programme that begins with pitching your business idea to our judging panel in Singapore. Up to 9 students will be selected for a fully-sponsored three month internship (SGD2000 monthly) within China in 2018.

Judging Criteria

Application for this award is open to all full-time undergraduates, preferably in their third or fourth year, in any programme of study, matriculated in any local university.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a presentation, where they are expected to be able to converse in Mandarin, given that the internship will be in China.

Pang Sheng Dong SVA Co-chair & Founder,

Pang Shengdong graduated from the Economic Management Department of Ningbo University in 1998, and obtained a master’s from the Yangtze River Business College in 2011. He set up and in 2005. Since 2006, Mr Pang has successively won the award of Chinese Internet Innovator, CEO award of Chinese IT Wealth , the Best Yearly Figure award of iResearch new economic annual conference, New and Vigorous award of Shanghai IT Ten Top Youth, and is one of “Chinese 40 business elites below 40" in 2012 for Fortune China. Mr Pang has donated a total of 10 million to the earthquake relief after the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. In 2015, he successively donated a total of 60 million, respectively donating 30 million to Tongji University and Ningbo University, for the Student Entrepreneurship Valley Fund and Reading Fund. In 2015, Hurun Charity List ranked Mr Pang 42nd.

Wang Yue Founder, KingNet

Wang Yue founded Kingnet Technology Co., Ltd in 2008. Initially, the company focused on the development and publishment of social network and mobile games. The Kingnet Technology team has successfully published many popular games. In 2014, Kingnet Technology and its team ventured into the Internet industry and developed many internet platforms e.g. XY Games, which leads the company to be ranked as the No. 1 in Forbes China 'Top 100 non-listed private enterprise' that year. The Kingnet Technology now employs more than 1000 employees worldwide for development and operation. In 2015, Kingnet Technology successfully listed on the Chinese A Stock Market. Kingnet Technology has become a representative for all the innovative enterprises and will lead them to explore a wider high-tech world. After Kingnet listed, the founder Wang Yue was ranked in the Hurun Rich List in 2016 with 6.6 billion RMB. Wang Yue was also ranked as the youngest self-made billionaire in China.

Andy Lim Chairman (Founder), Tembusu Partners

Andy Lim is the Founder and Chairman of private equity firm Tembusu Partners and the Chairman of a publicly listed company Viking Offshore & Marine Limited. He is also the Executive Director of Associated Leisure International, a family holding company and Chairman of MoneyWorld Group of Companies. His other Board appointments include Chairman of the Overseas Experts Council (Singapore Branch) of Peking University’s China Centre for Strategic Studies, Board of Trustee of Honour Singapore and a member of the Home Affairs Uniformed Service (HUS) INVEST Board of Trustee. In 2016, Mr Lim was appointed Honorary Consul General to the Republic of Lithuania after serving 12 years as the Honorary Consul. Mr Lim took an Overseas Merit Scholarship to study Engineering in Cambridge University where he graduated with First Class Honors in 1979. After an 8 year stint with the Singapore government, he went on to receive his MBA at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1989.

Chenchao Zhuang Co-Founder, & Co-founder, Zebra Global Capital

CC Zhuang is the Co-founder and former CEO of During his tenure, CC and his team grew Qunar from a small technology disruptor in the travel industry to become a leading online travel company, ranking fourth in terms of gross merchandise value among all eCommerce companies in China. In January 2016, CC departed from Qunar after it merged with the industry incumbent Ctrip and co-founded Zebra Global Capital with two former senior executives of Qunar. Zebra Global Capital is a new technology private equity fund which focuses on value creation through both operational value-creation and fundamental research. Prior to Zebra Global Capital, CC had invested in several internet companies such as Rong360. Before Qunar, CC was a core member of the World Bank's System Architecture team based in Washington DC, USA. Before moving to Washington DC, CC was CTO and founding member of Shawei, China's leading sports portal, which was acquired by The Tom Group in 2000. CC has a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Peking University.

Eddie WU Managing Director, Alibaba Singapore

Eddie WU joined Alibaba Group in 1999 as a member of its founding team and has been a senior vice president since June 2010. Mr Wu was appointed as Chairman of the Group’s healthcare business flagship Alibaba Health Information Technology since April 2015. Mr Wu has held senior management positions across the organization, leading Alibaba Group’s search, advertising and mobile Internet businesses. Mr Wu also played a key role in the formation of key businesses of Alibaba Group, including Taobao Marketplace, and Alipay.

Forrest Li Founder, Garena

Forrest Li founded Garena in May 2009 and has been the company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer since its inception. Mr Li aspires to make people’s daily life better through technology, and has devoted most of his career to the Technology, Media and Telecommunications industry. Prior to founding Garena, Mr Li worked at Motorola, Corning and MTV Networks. To tap into his entrepreneurial spirit, he also participated and contributed in the formation and development of several early stage technology start-up projects. Mr Li holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University in China and an MBA from Stanford University in the United States.

James Sheng Managing Director, Alipay Singapore

James Sheng joined Alibaba in 1999 as a founding member. In 2014, he and his team established the Singapore office of Alibaba, and served as managing director. Prior to his current position, he served as senior director of Taobao from 2013 to 2014. From 2006 to 2013, he served as director of Alipay User Experience Department. From 2002 to 2006, he held a post as senior manager of Alibaba China Business Unit, responsible for website operation management. From 1999 to 2002, James was chief designer of the Alibaba China Business Unit. James Sheng graduated from the China Academy of Arts. For years, he has tried to instill UED into the field of e-commerce, highlighting human aesthetics and discovering its value. Alibaba's logo "Smile Logo" and Alipay's logo "XinZhiFu" was also designed by James Sheng.

Tan Yinglan CEO & Managing Partner, Insignia Venture Partners

Tan Yinglan founded Insignia Venture Partners in 2017, an early stage technology venture fund focusing on Southeast Asia. Prior to founding Insignia Venture Partners, Yinglan was Sequoia Capital’s first hire and Venture Partner in Southeast Asia. He sourced multiple investment opportunities for Sequoia including Tokopedia, Go-jek, Carousell, Appier, Dailyhotel, Pinkoi and Yinglan had also been a member of the elite Singapore Administrative Service, where he served in a variety of positions in the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Defence. Yinglan was also the founding Director of 3i Venturelab China, a joint-venture between private equity firm 3i and INSEAD. During graduate school at Stanford, he had co-founded, raised angel funding and sold an online dating startup. Yinglan has been named as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2012 – 2017), a WEF Technology Pioneer Selection Committee Panel (2015-2017), Top “40 leaders under 40” by Prestige Magazine (2015), a World Cities Summit Young Leader (2014), a WEF Global Agenda Council member on Fostering Entrepreneurship (2011-2013) and a Kauffman Fellow. He also serves on the Singapore Government’s Pro Enterprise Panel and the Committee on the Future Economy's Sub- Committee on Future Corporate Capabilities and Innovation. Yinglan is an Adjunct Associate Professor at National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. He is also a Strategic Research Innovation Fund Investment Committee Member at Nanyang Technology University, author of 3 books and was educated at Harvard, Stanford and Carnegie Mellon.

Calvin Cheng Chairman Retech Technology

Calvin Cheng was an appointed Member of Parliament of Singapore in the Eleventh Parliament. He has also served on various Ministerial advisory boards including the Media Literacy Council, the Singapore Media Festival, Screen Singapore and the Government Feedback REACH supervisory council. Calvin is currently Co-Chairman of ASX listed Retech Technology Co Ltd (RTE:ASX), a technology solutions provider that creates online platforms for corporates, mainly in China, to deliver their corporate training online. Retech’s clients include large Chinese SOEs and MNCs. Calvin is also Executive Director of Lumina-Looque International, an integrated media company with offices in Singapore, Malaysia and China, which owns event companies, model agencies and a publishing company. Previously, Calvin was the Asia-Pacific Head of Elite Model Management, the world’s largest modeling agency. Calvin was also the Founder of Jue Rui Bao Si, a training company in China that trains some of the leading companies in China in soft skills. Jue Rui Bao Si has also partnered with some of China’s leading movie studios, including Bona Film Group, Enlight Media and Stellar Media Group, to train their artistes in deportment, image and communication. In August 2015, this was merged with the Retech Group. In December 2014, Calvin, together with Singapore’s Tembusu Partners and China’s Nasdaq-listed Bona Film Group, launched one of the world’s first media funds focused on China. Calvin graduated from the University of Oxford with a Master of Arts in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and a Master of Science in Management. Calvin is also a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum at Davos.

David Su Founding Managing Partner, Matrix Partners China

David Su is a founding managing partner at Matrix Partners China, focused primarily on mobile Internet, software and medical technology investments. David has been investing in China since early 2000 and his investments include Baidu (NSDQ:BIDU), Bona Film (NSDQ:BONA), Focus Media (NSDQ:FMCN), Kanghui Medical (NYSE:KH), AAC Technologies (2018.HK), Heptagon (SIX:AMS), Kingnet Games (SZ:002517), Nanjing Kingfriend Biochemical (SS:603707), Didi Chuxing, Youzan Mobile, Reach Surgical. Before Matrix, David was a founding general partner of TDF Capital and KPCB China. Prior to joining the venture capital industry, David worked at Lotus Development, IBM Software Group for more than seven years and was last responsible for Lotus’ software and services business in Greater China region. David graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Jenny Lee Managing Partner, GGV Capital

Jenny Lee joined GGV Capital in 2005 as a managing partner and was instrumental in setting up the GGV presence in China. Jenny’s previous operation and finance work experience including Singapore Technologies Aerospace, Morgan Stanley and JAFCO Asia. Jenny graduated from Cornell University with a Masters and B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and an M.B.A. from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Since 2011, Jenny has been recognized by the Forbes Global 100 VC Midas List of top venture capitalists, ranking as the #1 woman and #10 overall in 2015. In 2016, she was named to the Vanity Fair New Establishment list, Fast Company Most Creative People in Business list and was recognized by The New York Times and CB Insights among the top 100 venture capital investors worldwide, ranking #17 and one of the only two selected from Mainland China. Jenny’s areas of focus are on consumer internet and SaaS companies especially those in mobile social, IoT, finance and education sectors. Jenny currently serves on the board of Ehang, Keep,, Kingsoft WPS, and other companies.
